Georgetown residents can recycle their holiday decorations, including string lights and Christmas trees, at several city facilities, with some pickup options also available.

The details

Residents are encouraged to recycle Christmas trees, boxes and plain wrapping paper, according to a city news release. Embellished wrapping paper, foil, ribbons and bows cannot be recycled.

Residents can recycle their retired or broken holiday string lights for free through Jan. 30 at the following collection locations:
  • Georgetown Municipal Complex, 300-1 Industrial Ave.
  • Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. Eighth St.
  • Georgetown Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave.
  • Cowan Creek Amenity Center, 1433 Cool Spring Way
Other holiday decorations cannot be donated at these locations.

Texas Disposal Systems customers within Georgetown city limits can place Christmas trees at their curb for pickup on regular yard trimmings collection day. Check collection dates here.

Trees longer than 7 feet should be cut into sections, and decorations like garlands and ornaments should be removed from all trees. Artificial trees are not eligible for pickup.

One more thing

Georgetown residents can drop off Christmas trees from Jan. 2-Jan. 31 for free at the Georgetown Transfer Station, located at 250 W.L. Walden Drive. Trees should be free of decorations, and artificial trees are not eligible.

The recycled Christmas trees are turned into mulch available year-round and free to residents.

Williamson County residents may recycle Christmas trees for free through Jan. 4 at the Williamson County Landfill, located at 600 Landfill Road in Hutto.

Why it matters

Holiday lights should not be placed in residential or commercial recycling bins because they can damage sorting equipment in recycling facilities, the news release states.
