The setup
Some county operations, including all of the offices operating out of the historic courthouse, will move into the new Williamson County Administration Building next year. The 120,000-square-foot facility is located on an 170-acre tract of land near Southwestern Boulevard and SE Inner Loop in Georgetown.
In addition to finding space solutions before the administration building opens, commissioners are also in the site-selection process for a new Justice Center Complex, which will add significant office space for justice employees.
The current situation
County staff have already implemented Phase 1 of interim office space plans, utilizing other county-owned buildings as well as some hybrid work solutions, County Manager Rebecca Clemons said. Phase 1 affects space for the Elections Office, a newly hired County Court at Law director, and Information Technology employees.
At an Oct. 7 meeting, commissioners approved phases 2-4, which began this month and will roll out in phases until October 2030.
Latest update
Phase 2, planned for October 2025 through May 2026, of the interim office plans will find solutions for a new district court.
Texas lawmakers passed a bill during the most recent legislative session establishing the 512th Judicial District in Williamson County. The legislative action adds a new court to the county to equalize judicial burdens, according to state code.
The district attorney staff associated with the new court will utilize a property across from the county jail, which commissioners purchased Sept. 9. Williamson County is working with the city of Georgetown to build temporary offices at the site, Clemons said at a Sept. 16 meeting.
The court itself, as well as office space for the judge and staff, will use modified space in the current Justice Building.
“Nothing is going to be ideal, but we’re going to figure out what we can do to make everything work,” Clemons said at the Sept. 16 meeting.
What else?
Phase 3, scheduled for May 2026 through October 2026, will move various departments into the new administration building.
At this time, all the offices in the historic courthouse will move to the Administration Building, including:
- County Judge’s Office
- Treasurer’s Office
- Commissioners Court
- Office of Public Affairs
- Budget Office
- CDBG Grants Department
- County Auditor’s Office
- Tax Office
- Internal Audit Department
- Some county clerk operations
- All offices from the Bob Phillips Building
- The Purchasing Department from the Inner Loop Annex building
Phase 4 will look ahead from 2027 to 2030, determining the use of the buildings that will be vacant after the administration building move. Commissioners will need to determine the use of the historic courthouse at this time, Clemons said.
“It’s a safe assumption that other needs will arise before 2030,” Clemons said.
