Several events will be held throughout Georgetown in January to honor Martin Luther King Jr., an activist who was assassinated almost 57 years ago.

Marches, breakfasts, performances and more are planned starting on Jan. 20, MLK Day, and will go through Jan. 31, according to a news release. This is not a comprehensive list. Events are subject to change.

Marchers will head toward Macedonia Baptist Church, where keynote speaker Sonja Cousar, Sunshine Counselor founder and CEO, will be featured at a program.MLK prayer breakfast for community leaders

The Georgetown Ministerial Alliance and the Georgetown Police Department are hosting a prayer breakfast for community leaders.The Georgetown Project’s day of youth service


The nonprofit is inviting high school students to participate in indoor and outdoor service projects and group activities. Students will receive a certificate for three service hours and will be offered free snacks and lunch, according to its website. Derrick Standifer will present a keynote address during Southwestern University’s dream week, celebrating MLK Jr. Free food will be provided at the event, which is open to the public.‘Thurgood’ at Southwestern University

Southwestern University will host a performance of “Thurgood,” a one-man play celebrating the life of Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court Justice. The one-man play features Selmore Haines III, founder of The Joyful Noise Christian Theater of Dallas. While admission is free, tickets are required.Also of note

In recognition of the federal holiday, several city offices will be closed on Jan. 20, according to a news release. The full list of city offices and facilities closed can be found here. According to the city’s website, the Georgetown Executive Airport terminal, Garey Park and the city’s transfer station will be open.
