Georgetown City Council unanimously approved a special use permit for a new music store and bar on the historic Georgetown Square Aug. 13.

The gist

Known as Six Strings Guitar & Lounge, the new store will be located at 705 S. Main St. between 7th and 8th streets. Formerly the site of Ken’z Guitars & Accessories, Six Strings Guitar & Lounge's owners intend to redevelop the space for the sale of musical instruments as well as for secondary uses like music lessons, live music and a bar and lounge, said Maddison O’Kelley, Georgetown preservation and redevelopment manager for the city.

Six Strings Guitar & Lounge will include:
  • 180-square-foot bar
  • 420 square-foot seating area
  • 700 square-foot retail space
  • Two lesson rooms
Though the interior will undergo some renovations, the exterior will remain the same except for new signage, O’Kelley said.

O’Kelley said that the SUP is necessary because the portion of the suite dedicated to on-premise sale and consumption of alcohol falls under the bar, tavern or pub land use category in the city’s unified development code, which does require the approval of the special use permit.

The property is also located within the special area future land use category which is intended for unique destinations that emphasize retail, office and entertainment uses, O’Kelley said.

What else?

According to city documents, Six Strings Guitar & Lounge will offer guitars and other musical instruments and accessories for sale; instrument repair, live music and open mic nights, as well as beer and wine. The store will have three to four employees operating the retail and lounge area, three music teachers and a repair technician.
