Republican incumbent Charles Schwertner may face Democratic candidate Paul Thomasson for the District 5 seat, unofficial voting results for the March 3 primary races show.
Democratic incumbent Judith Zaffirini has been reelected to lead Senate District 21.
A closer look
Schwertner is largely leading the Senate District 5 Republican primary race with 75% of the vote, or 39,614 votes, followed by Larry Nance with 14% of the vote, or 7,491 votes, while Apollo Hernandez received 11% of the vote, or 5,590 votes.
In the District 5 Democratic primary, unofficial voting results showed Thomasson leading by a narrow margin with 51% of the vote, or 31,703 votes, followed by Nelson with 49% of the vote, or 30,123 votes.
For Senate District 21, Zaffirini is largely lead with 73% of the vote, 67,165 votes, while challenger Cortney Jones received 27% of the vote with 24,657 votes.

Kevin Nelson is narrowly leading in the Democratic primary for Senate District 5.
The details
According to unofficial voting results for the Republican primary election, Schwertner is leading for Senate District 5 with 77% of the vote, or 29,229 votes. Larry Nance received 13% of the vote with 4,935 votes followed by Apollo Hernandez with 10% of the vote, or 3,968 votes.
In the Democratic primary for District 5, Nelson is leading by a narrow margin with 51% of the vote, or 11,021 votes, over Paul Thomasson with 49% of the vote, or 10,600 votes.
Zaffirini is leading in the Democratic race for Senate District 21 with 75% of the vote, or 58,826 votes. Cortney Jones follows with 25% of the vote, or 19,942 votes.

Incumbent Judith Zaffirini is leading against Cortney Jones in the Democratic primary for Texas Senate District 21.
What you need to know
Two state senator positions for Districts 5 and 21 were on the ballot for Central Texas voters in the March 3 election. Senate District 5 includes Williamson and Bastrop counties as well as Bryan. Senate District 21 encompasses southern Travis County and parts of Hays County.
For Senate District 5, Schwertner faces Larry Nance and Apollo Hernandez in the Republican primary.
According to early voting results, Schwertner is leading with 78% of the vote, or 14,989 votes, followed by Nance with 12% of the vote, or 2,359 votes. Hernandez has 10% of the vote with 1,876 votes.
In the Democratic primary, Paul Thomasson is running against Nelson for Senate District 5. Nelson is leading with 51% of the vote, or 5,095 votes, while Thomasson has 49% of the vote with 4,903 votes.
For Senate District 21, Zaffirini is leading with 73% of the vote, or 35,257 votes, as Jones follows with 27% of the vote, or 13,040 votes.
