The Georgetown ISD board of trustees approved up to $6 million in remaining 2021 bond funds to be spent on campus upgrades and improved radio network infrastructure May 18.
By the numbers
GISD funded seven initiatives using the unspent bond funds. The largest chunk of this sum will allocate up to $3.5 million to upgrade aging playground equipment at GISD’s older elementary schools and install poured-in-place rubber surfacing at all of the district’s elementary campuses.
Additionally, the district has dedicated up to $1 million to replace kitchen equipment across campuses.
Other projects funded by this vote include:
- Roofing repairs at East View High School
- Replacing projection equipment at multiple large venues across the district
- Expanding radio network infrastructure with four new digital towers
- Turf installation at multiple middle schools
- Restroom mirror installations at Georgetown High School and EVHS
The context
While school bonds can be used for investments in assets and infrastructure, they typically cannot be used for operating costs.
In April, GISD approved spending $3.62 million in remaining 2021 bond funds to upgrade its school bus fleet.
The district has also allocated $852,000 and $2.3 million in unspent 2021 bond funds toward campus upgrades in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
