Georgetown ISD may rezone some students to attend different campuses next school year.

The district will adopt updated attendance boundaries to accommodate the opening of new schools and balance enrollment across campuses nearing their capacities, Chief of Strategic Operations Lannon Heflin said at a Sept. 2 board workshop.

What’s happening

GISD will rezone campuses for the 2026-27 school year to:
  • Open Elementary School No. 12 and Middle School No. 5
  • Address capacity concerns at Williams, Wolf Ranch and Cooper elementaries
  • Maximize the utilization of current campuses
  • Plan for future growth
The district is aiming to adopt attendance zones that will balance student demographics; prioritize student programs, transportation and safety; and reduce the use of portables, Heflin said.

GISD is committed to minimizing future attendance zone changes for students who are impacted by the rezoning next school year, he said.

The approach

In September, GISD will form a committee of district officials, staff and 15 community members to help create new attendance boundaries. Campus principals may nominate community members to participate in the committee.

The district will hold a series of town hall meetings over the next few months and receive community feedback online in January.

"The more that we get people involved in helping us with these decisions and being transparent on why we're thinking these processes, that helps out immensely," trustee Cody Hirt said.

In February, district officials will present their rezoning recommendations to the board of trustees for their final approval.

The background

GISD's enrollment, which is around 13,900 students, is expected to grow to about 16,300 students by the 2029-30 school year and 19,900 students by the 2034-35 school year, according to Zonda Demographics.

There are 51 actively building subdivisions and plans for 27 future subdivisions in the district, according to Zonda Demographics information. There are 3,600 lots receiving groundwork within 20 of these subdivisions.

In the 2025-26 school year, Wolf Ranch is projected to exceed its capacity of 850 students with 994 students. Williams and Cooper elementaries are projected to reach 90% of their capacities with 758 and 640 students, respectively, this school year.

This fall, East View High School exceeded its capacity with 2,280 students while Georgetown High School reached 90% of its capacity with 2,061 students.

Something to note

GISD will open Elementary School No. 12 and Middle School No. 5 in August 2026 off Patriot Way and SH 130 Toll near East View High School. The middle school will be built to accommodate 950 students, while the elementary school is expected to serve 850 students, according to district information.

The district is expected to break ground on its fourth high school off DB Wood Road in October.
