Georgetown’s Southwestern University is closer to reaching its funding goal for a new $9.2 million sports complex after two alumni pledged a $1 million gift to the university.

What happened

After couple Kevin and Elizabeth Dice pledged their donation to the complex, university officials decided to name the future field at the complex after them, according to a news release.

“The commitment of Kevin and Elizabeth is a true testament to their dedication to the future of our university, and we are proud to have their name forever associated with this important project,” Vice President for University Relations Marie Muhvic said in the release.

What to expect

The new multipurpose complex will be located on the site of the current football practice field east of campus, and updated plans show it will include:
  • A grandstand
  • A stadium press box
  • A synthetic turf playing surface
  • Locker rooms
  • A concourse area
  • An arena
Marking a milestone

The Cullen Trust for Higher Education pledged $3 million to build the complex in July 2024, per the release. To date, a total of $4 million has been raised for the construction of the new facility, which will be funded 100% through philanthropy.

Construction for the complex will begin once the full $9.2 million is secured, per the release.

The backstory

In 2013, the university re-established the SU Pirates football team, which currently plays at Georgetown ISD’s Birkelbach Field. The new sports complex’s stadium will bring football back to SU’s campus for the first time since 1950, according to the release.

The facility will also be utilized by other sports teams and for university events, per the release.
