Editor's Note: This story has been updated to reflect the status of the board of trustees' decision.

Georgetown ISD students needing to take over-the-counter medications during the school day may soon need signatures from both a parent and medical provider, following a policy update under consideration by the district's board of trustees.

What you need to know

Trustees will in August consider a policy update to align the district's health services department with best practices per the Nursing Practice Act and Texas Board of Nursing. This update requires both the signatures of a medical provider as well as a parent or guardian for the administration of over-the-counter medications, including:
  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Oral or topical allergy medication
  • Insect bite or burn gel
