Even as the coronavirus pandemic has forced many events to adjust, Georgetown ISD will continue with its adopted 2020-21 school year calendar until further notice, GISD Superintendent Fred Brent said during a May 18 board of trustee meeting.

Brent said while there have been discussions among other school districts and the Texas Education Agency, GISD plans to keep the calendar in place.

“For now, we know that we are looking at honoring the calendar that we've adopted,” Brent said. “And we will not make any changes to that that will disrupt lives more unless absolutely necessary.”

Brent said while school will definitely occur in the fall, he is unsure to what extent or what it will look like until more information is available. He added that the district is working on assessment tools to help evaluate students upon their return and meet them where they are to continue learning.

In February, the board adopted a two-year calendar to help families with future planning.

The 2020-21 school year is scheduled to begin Aug. 20.
