For over 30 years, Laurie’s Cafe has established an inviting, homey environment where customers can enjoy a home-cooked meal.

The background

Co-owner Beth Ernest said she and her husband, Don, purchased the restaurant in 2017. Prior to that, she said the cafe has found a home in Georgetown for over 30 years under different ownership.

Beth Ernest said they were interested in owning a barbecue restaurant after working at State Line in El Paso for over 15 years. However, the couple came across Laurie’s Cafe in 2016 and decided to nourish the roots of the longtime business.

On the menu

Beth Ernest said when they purchased the restaurant, they were planning to change the menu, but the cafe’s longtime supporters pleaded against it.

“I had a whole kitchen of people that knew how to do this menu, and I had so many people come in and say, ‘Please don’t change the menu,’” she said.

While the cafe still features the classics with minor tweaks, Beth Ernest said they added a few items to pay tribute to her family’s hometown of El Paso, including the Green Chile Quiche. The menu consists of quiches, salads, sandwiches, soups, burgers, nine different frozen casseroles, muffins and pie.

Another detail

With bright tablecloths draping under glass tables and simplistic decor, the eatery recreates the atmosphere of a cozy lunch at grandma’s house, Beth Ernest said. The restaurant hosts harpists every Monday to add to its comfortable ambience.

Beth Ernest said there are many regular customers that have specific days they go in or tables they sit at and have become familiar faces with the restaurant staff.

“People really enjoy coming in here,” Beth Ernest said. “They tell me all the time, ‘I just feel like I’ve rested here. I had a good meal and good conversation.’”
