Retro burger joint Gold Burger Diner opened at the Georgetown Square in mid-July.

What’s on the menu

The diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, including burgers and southern classics like liver and onions and chicken fried steak. Craft cocktails are served in coffee mugs, and beer, wine and boozy milkshakes are also available.

The restaurant may begin offering blue plate specials such as meatloaf or enchiladas, said co-owner Cody Hirt, who serves on the Georgetown ISD board of trustees.

The backstory

Gold Burger Diner commemorates Harry Gold and his business Gold’s Department Store, which operated on the square from 1936 to 1996, Hirt said.

“Harry was just a spectacular human being [and] served the community," Hirt said. "If kids couldn’t afford school clothes he would help them along. We wanted to pay homage to not only him but also this building and what it did for the community."

Hirt said he hopes Gold Burger Diner becomes a regular dining spot where seniors can reminisce on good times while connecting with younger generations. Co-owner Tommy McCormick said he felt Georgetown Square was missing a burger joint to bring families together.

“Some of the best times of people’s lives where in the 60s, 70s in diners...” Hirt said. "We want this to be for the new generation too."

About the owners

The business is owned by Hirt and McCormick alongside Tim Carr, Brad Strittmatter, Troy Hellmann and Brady Clarke. Hirt and some of his partners own several Georgetown businesses, including The Golden Rule, Mesquite Creek Outfitters, and River and Ranch Provisions.

Hirt said he is planning to open a new business venture for families and children in the coming weeks.
