GAF Energy, a solar roofing manufacturing company, will move its headquarters to its Georgetown plant in December. The relocation comes after a notice to close its facility in San Jose, California.

What happened

The solar company plans to close its San Jose headquarters and lay off 138 employees on Dec. 13, according to a California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed by GAF Energy. The San Jose factory was GAF Energy's first facility, and opened in 2021.

What's next

Manufacturing operations for the company will now be based out of the 450,000 square-foot Georgetown facility, which opened in May 2024. The Georgetown facility produces GAF's Timberline Solar, an nailable solar shingle.

The company received incentives from the city to build in Georgetown, and plans to invest more than $100 million in the facility in the next 10 years, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

What they're saying

"In light of ongoing changes in the solar industry, we are aligning our business and our team to focus on key markets where solar is most compelling for builders and homeowners. The changes we are making include centralizing all Operations, Manufacturing and Research & Development at our headquarters in Georgetown, Texas to drive efficiencies, foster stronger collaboration and partnership amongst teams, and better serve customers," A GAF Energy spokesperson said in a statement to Community Impact. "This decision was not taken lightly. We are grateful to our employees in San Jose for their contributions to the business and are committed to assisting those impacted through this transition."
