Doyla A. Burrell is one of three candidates running to represent voters on the Hays CISD Board of Trustees. Voters will cast their ballots May 6.

Why are you running?
I have no hidden agenda.  I simply want to serve the community in which I live.

What will be your top priority if elected?
My top priority is education, career and technical education classes expanded in both high school campuses and helping find a way to help students improve year to year.

Why do you think you are qualified to be a trustee?
My current employment and past military and leadership training have provided me with unique skills to serve this community and the board. I have lived in the district since 2000 and have had two children successfully complete high school. I have been involved in the community and various activities with both of my children. I have served on the Hays Education Foundation Board since 2011. This has provided valuable insight to district needs and how it operates.

Hays CISD will hold a bond election this year. Do you support the bond propositions?
I am not in favor of Proposition 1. I believe the design of the buildings can be changed [to] reduce the cost to build the schools, but allow us to have the same functionality. I am in favor of Proposition 2. I feel that each campus should be equipped with the same educational, safety and security equipment for the students and staff to achieve the highest level of education.

What is your opinion on the state's A-F accountability ratings?
I think there has to be a better way to determine if a district is educating the students.

How well do you think the district does in attracting and retaining top educators?
We need to do a better job.
