A Lake Travis High School teacher will have new technology in the upcoming school year to teach students about music through technology after receiving a $2,000 grant July 12 from the Texas Cultural Trust.
“I was reluctant in the beginning, but now I love [the class],” said Anna Macias, a longtime LTHS orchestra teacher and founder of the Lake Travis Fiddlers, a group of middle and high schoolers who perform fiddle tunes and Western swing music.
The Music and Media Communications class, which counts for one fine-arts credit, is in its second year of existence, and Macias said she expects to have more than 25 students enroll in the fall. Lake Travis ISD needs more equipment for the growing number of students interested in taking the class, she said.
Charles Aguillon, the LTHS director of fine arts who designed the course, said the stipend will go toward purchasing new iPads, tablets and other technology for students.
“We’re very excited because we’re one of the growing number of schools who are participating in these courses, and we’re very grateful to the Texas Cultural Trust to give us the opportunity,” he said. “They know we want to continue bringing technology in classrooms, but we’re limited in funding.”
