If the Austin ISD board of trustees
votes on March 28 to proceed with renaming Robert E. Lee Elementary School, it will not have legal roadblocks preventing a name change.
During a March 21 meeting, AISD legal staff said to the board that certain federal and state laws do not serve as an impediment to changing the name of Lee Elementary or any other school, as AISD is an independent school district and not owned by the state of Texas.
The board is considering a name change recommendation made by the Lee Elementary Campus Advisory Council.
Reyne Telles, AISD Communications and Community Engagement executive director, said the Community Engagement Office will disseminate a notice of the change and solicit nominations for a new school name for a minimum of 10 business days. It will then be up to the board to decide what to do with the list of names, he added.
The board can name a committee, instruct AISD staff, or determine on its own to decide what to do with the list of school names, Telles said.
Trustees said they anticipate many public comments about the issue on March 28. Trustee Paul Saldaña said there should be a public hearing because of the anticipated amount of comments.
In contrast, Trustee Gina Hinojosa said she feels confident the board has
heard enough from community members in the past six months and does not feel like there should be a public hearing just for this issue, but if her colleagues disagree then it should be held.
