From Feb. 19 through the end of the month, newly-launched nonprofit organization Supply the Teachers will be distributing more than 6,300 boxes full of school supplies to teachers.

The nonprofit organization, which received $1.4 million worth of supplies from 3M, addresses the problem of teachers paying out-of-pocket for school supplies, Supply the Teachers spokesperson Trey Goldsmith said.

"It's not every day you get a $1.4 million kickstarter, so to speak, of supplies to launch [a] campaign," he said.

Teachers on average spend $250 per year out-of-pocket per year for school supplies, Goldsmith said. The long term goal of the nonprofit is to give every AISD teacher $250 per school year for school supplies, he added.

On Feb. 18, Austin ISD Superintendent Paul Cruz, Supply the Teachers Founder Melinda McKenna and Russell Bridges, government and community affairs manager for 3M, will visit the AISD Warehouse in Southwest Austin to announce the $1.4 million donation and thank volunteers.

On Jan. 30, University of Texas at Austin student athletes and volunteers helped sort 80 pallets of supplies into gift boxes, according to Supply the Teachers.
