Austin ISD board of trustees President Gina Hinojosa announced at the Dec. 14 board meeting that she will be resigning as board president effective Dec. 15.

Hinojosa said she has filed as a candidate for the 2016 state House of Representatives District 49 election. Earlier in the morning, Hinojosa announced her candidacy on Facebook.

Trustee Amber Elenz, the board vice president, will handle the duties of the board president, Hinojosa said.

Hinojosa began serving on the board Nov. 2012 and became board president in January.

"Thank you to all who have helped me in my role as board president," Hinojosa said.

Hinojosa will remain on the board, according to AISD.
