In one year, a summer program for Pecan Springs Elementary School students has grown from five weeks to six, from 70 students to 88 and from 81 volunteers to 88.
The Summer Learning Program, funded by the Andy Roddick Foundation, gives Pecan Springs students the opportunity to continue learning during the summer, while school is out. The program launched its second year on June 18.
Former professional tennis player Andy Roddick visited the campus on June 29, playing games with the children on a hot summer day.
Roddick said it was exciting to see the program’s positive growth from year one to two, including 98 percent of eligible returning students from the first year.
“You walk through our program and the kids are so well behaved,” Roddick said. “To come here and see these kids, how diligent they are, how much they’re enjoying it, you don’t get the feeling they feel like it’s homework for the summer.”
