Libby will be introduced by her husband, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, whose district includes San Marcos. The new school can accommodate up to 600 students and includes 27 classrooms. Bonham Principal Rosemary Garza said there are about 400 students enrolled at the school right now. Garza said recently school board members have been discussing a proposal that would allow families to pay tuition to enroll their children in the school. Currently the school only accepts children who are economically disadvantaged as defined by the federal government. The new campus includes special education classrooms, computer labs, a music room, an activity room and a library, all of which will be on display during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “I’m glad the voters voted to give us a new and improved Bonham,” Garza said. “The things that are in place—little windows the students can look out of, teeny tiny toilets—all these little things you just don’t think about, it makes a huge difference.” For the past six years the district’s pre-k program was housed at Hernandez Elementary School. Before that the program was housed at the old Bonham campus, which now houses the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos. “I think just having a school that is totally dedicated to working with an early childhood population and putting our whole concentrated effort on pre-k—looking at trends, studying data from our assessments—really helps us firm up that foundation of where we are and where we’re going,” Garza said. If the March 12 ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremonies get crowded, Garza said overflow parking will be directed to nearby Goodnight Middle School, 1301 Hwy. 123, San Marcos.
