District officials expect to break ground on Norman Elementary School in spring 2015.

The elementary campus, which will be located in the Riverwalk subdivision off FM 685, will feature some efficient technology intended to reduce operating costs, including a windmill water pump, native landscaping and water conservation systems.

Rainwater collection systems, which catch and store rainwater and water dripping from the air conditioning system, will also be installed.

Inside the building special tubes will funnel natural light to interior classrooms. Building materials will be bought regionally and locally, according to HISD documents.

HISD board trustees authorized the district to sell $25 million worth of bonds in November to fund the school construction. Construction should be finished before the 2016–17 school year.
