The Hays CISD board of trustees may get a new member in the coming weeks.
After District 1 trustee Shaun Bosar resigned in December, the board began soliciting applications from the residents in that district to fill the seat until school board elections in May.
The deadline to apply is Jan. 14 at 4 p.m.
Bosar, who was elected in 2011, moved his family to the Houston area in December. His term was set to expire in May.
According to state law, he still has voting power until the board names a replacement or someone is elected to the seat.
Jesus Ignacio Espinoza, Edward G. Lara and Cassandra Samora Mendez, Dr. Samuel James Mungo, Dr. Michelle Marie Lopez and Rudolph V. Pittman Jr.—all of whom reside in single-member District 1—have filed for the special appointment. They will be vetted in upcoming meetings. The current timeline calls for a possible appointment at a special-called meeting on Feb. 3.
Board President Willie Tenorio entered the board through the special appointment process in 2009, when trustee Joe Muoz resigned because a move out of his district.
Tenorio was then elected to a full term the following year.
With major decisions in the pipeline this spring, Tenorio said it was imperative for the citizens of single-member District 1 to have a representative on the seven-member body.
"We have to make sure somebody from District 1 is representing that area during a time where there is going to be a lot of change to the district," he said.
Apart from a bond program that has gone through a committee process but has yet to be given the go-ahead for an election, the board is also taking up budget decisions in the coming months, Tenorio said.
The first budget process under new Superintendent Michael McKie is sure to be an important one, he added.
The board is set to review applications at a Jan. 21 meeting and interview candidates Jan. 27, according to the Hays CISD website.
