Did you know AARP, formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, provides free tax assistance, especially to low- and moderate-income taxpayers as well as those 50 years and older? The program offers help for individuals filing personal income tax returns and added a Bee Cave site this year in addition to a Central Austin location within travel distance to western Travis County taxpayers, Austin district coordinator Anne Ubertini said. Bee Cave Public Library will serve as a site beginning Feb. 8. Who qualifies? “With the AARP Tax-Aide program, we don’t discriminate based on [the] income [level of the taxpayer], but we do gear the service toward low- to moderate-income individuals,” Ubertini said. “The AARP was set up to help the elderly, but we do not discriminate based on age—we don’t turn people away if they are under 50 [years old].” In 2016, the Austin district prepared 1,765 tax returns and also helped an additional 422 people with questions, according to a news release.
