The restaurant opened its doors on Metric Boulevard on Jan. 11, 1996. The area has seen a lot of growth, and Lacey credits surrounding neighborhoods such as Gracywoods with keeping the eatery in business. “We’ve had some of the same folks coming here for 20 years,” he said. “There’s a lot of gratification in that.” Lacey said local artists such as Joshua Kight have ensured the black-and-white walls in the cafe are always adorned with new artwork. Unlike the art the menu has not changed much, Lacey added. The Java Special—with bacon, eggs, hash browns, toast and coffee—is still a bestseller at $7. “It’s been on our menu for 20 years,” Lacey said. “Although 20 years ago it was $5.”
