Central Health will host an event Thursday to provide updates on future plans for University Medical Center Brackenridge, which will close in May and be replaced by the new Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas.

Officials with Travis County's public health district unveiled plans in 2015 to partner with a developer to remake the 14.3-acre UMCB campus into a mixed-use district with a focus on health care service and research.

A master plan for the redevelopment calls for about 3.7 million square feet of new construction space with the potential for buildings between 35 and 40 stories tall. Central Health will lease the Brackenridge campus to a developer but will keep ownership of the property.

Thursday's event will include presentations and opportunities for attendees to offer comments.

In particular, Central Health officials plan to discuss a possible land-use overlay for the campus, a decision on which is pending before the city of Austin Planning Commission, according to a Central Health news release.

The event will also include updates on a proposed public marketplace that would be located in the redeveloped campus, a projected timeline for redevelopment and information on how services from UMCB will be transferred to Dell Seton Medical Center once the new teaching hospital opens.

Twelve developers responded to a request for qualifications, or RFQ, issued by Central Health this past fall.

The RFQ is a formal request seeking general information from interested developers. Central Health plans to seek a more detailed request for proposals within the first quarter of 2017.
