Sunset Valley Violet Crown Trail Phase II of the Violet Crown trail is planned to go through the city of Sunset Valley along Brodie Lane, south of Home Depot Boulevard and into the Indian Grass Prairie Preserve.[/caption] Sunset Valley City Council on Oct. 13 unanimously approved an amendment to the city's Trails Master Plan to prepare for the construction of Phase II of the Violet Crown Trail. The council added wording to the Trails Master Plan to allow the use of stabilized soil aggregate, which is the material that will be used for the portion of the Violet Crown Trail anticipated to go through Sunset Valley. City Administrator Clay Collins said the stabilized soil aggregate is a proprietary material named StaLok, which is similar to soil but has the strength of asphalt. The portion of the Violet Crown Trail Phase II in Sunset Valley runs from the west end of Home Depot Boulevard through the Indian Grass Prairie Preserve to green space owned by the city of Austin, Collins said. Phase I of the Violet Crown Trail, which opened Aug. 15, runs south from Zilker Park in Austin to a trailhead north of Hwy. 290 near Brodie Lane in Sunset Valley. Collins said the Sunset Valley portion of the Violet Crown Trail Phase II connects two shopping areas and seven neighborhoods, so the trail will be designed for multiple uses. The entirety of Phase II runs from Sunset Valley to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, according to the city of Sunset Valley. Construction for the Sunset Valley portion of Phase II may start in early 2016, Collins said.
