April's sales tax revenue report, released in June by Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar, shows city of Austin sales tax revenue decreased 1.57 percent from April 2016, whereas cities in the greater Austin area have seen significant growth.

Hutto saw the greatest increase at 16.44 percent from last year, followed closely by Leander and Round Rock.

Sales tax revenue is directly proportional to consumer spending, meaning that the decline in sales tax revenue in Austin signals a decline in consumer participation in the economy. A 2016 report released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area economy grew 5.0 percent last year, making it the second-fastest growing metro in the nation.
