Lakeway City Council on March 19 approved a special-use permit for a new business called Garages of Texas to be located on 8 acres of land south of Debba Drive and behind Grumpy’s at 1009 N. RM 620.

The warehouse-designed business fell outside any city-specific zoning rules, city correspondence showed.Staff recommended approval.

“The proposed use would be a good utilization of this property and would have minimal impact on traffic,” city staff wrote.

The enterprise’s concept is to market the purchase of 78 garage suites to high-end car collectors and enthusiasts. Each suite would range in price from $175,000-$375,000 plus finish-out costs. Buyers could customize their units by incorporating plumbing, air conditioning, internet, lofts, auto lifts and high-end finishes, according to city records.

Gathering areas for car collectors are also part of the plan, city information showed.

The units would be accessible 24 hours a day, but overnight stays and parking would not be permitted. The concept has already launched in other Texas cities, including Plano and Frisco. A project spokesperson told city staff when the two phases of the project are complete, the facility will have a $18 million taxable value.
