A footbridge connecting Thompson's Island parkland to the bank of the San Marcos River has collapsed, the city of San Marcos said in a news release.

The collapse occurred at the mill race, the man-made channel next to Cape's Dam which allows kayakers and tubers to bypass the dam and reconnect with the river’s main channel farther east near Martindale.

Spokesperson Kristy Stark said the collapse occurred naturally, and crews are working to remove the debris.

Thompson's Island and Cape's Park have been closed for several years because of damage caused by storms. According to the release, major repairs are required in these parks, and no date has been set to reopen them.
