The Lakeway Heritage Center, 963 Lohmans Crossing, Lakeway, is accepting submissions of names of local veterans to be engraved on the Heritage Park Spirit of Freedom Monument.

The program is open for submissions year-round but has an Aug. 15 closing date for this year’s engravings, said Mike Boston, Lakeway Heritage Center archivist-coordinator.

“This is a monument that pays tribute not only to those who lost lives during periods of armed conflict but those who served during periods of armed conflict,” he said.

In 1994 a group of Lakeway residents started the concept for the monument primarily to commemorate those who served in World War II, Boston said. In 1997 the group expanded the memorial to veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he said.

“On Sept. 11, 2001, we realized conflict was going to go on forever,” Boston said.

Although an obelisk in the center is dedicated to World War II veterans, two panels commemorate veterans of post-Vietnam conflicts, including today’s global war on terror, he said.

The monument was dedicated on Veterans Day in 1995 and includes 1,052 military members’ names.
