1. Over the next two weeks, Austin Police officers are cracking down on violations such as not following the hands-free cell phone law or idling in rights of way for more than five minutes. The police enforcement is part of the city's Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate fatalities caused by traffic incidents by 2025.

2. Outdoor music venues in the Red River Cultural District will be allowed to extend the outdoor live music curfew from 11 p.m. to midnight Thursdays and from midnight to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays starting in May. Austin City Council voted Thursday for the change that will last six months as part of a pilot project. Owners have said the time extension would help them make the necessary revenue to adequately pay musicians and keep up with the rising cost of rent.

3. East Austin's Maplewood Elementary School holds its second annual Maplewood Elementary Parent Prom event this Saturday from 7-10 p.m. The Recliners and DJ Andy Smith will be performing, and there will be a silent auction and photo booth. Last year, parents raised $10,000, which were used to purchase technology, books and classroom supplies. The prom is sponsored by Cherrywood Coffeehouse, held at Spiderhouse Ballroom, 2908 Fruth St., Austin, and costs $20. Tickets can be purchased here.

4. Pedestrian safety devices such as countdown timers and accessible audible pedestrian signals for the visually impaired will be installed around 500 Austin intersections thanks to a $1.9 million grant the city received from the Texas Department of Transportation. Installation is slated to begin this summer.

5. Business owners on South First Street are hosting the First Wednesday Sip & Shop this Wednesday in an effort to encourage people to shop local. Businesses will stay open until 9 p.m., and restaurants will offer specials.
