Pflugerville City Council decided Tuesday night to delay a decision on how to fill a seventh council seat created when voters passed Proposition 1 in the Nov. 8 election, amending Pflugerville’s city charter.

According to city officials, upon the declaration of a vacancy, which in essence occurred when Proposition 1 passed, the council has several options to fill the seat as provided by the city charter.

The council may appoint someone to fill the seat, it may call a special election for voters to select a candidate for the spot, or the council may wait until the regular election next November to allow voters to choose someone to complete the council panel.

Mayor Jeff Coleman stated that during executive session, council had discussed at length how to handle filling the vacancy, which ultimately resulted in the council tabling the issue until the council’s next meeting. That meeting will have some new faces on the dais to help make the decision.

Tuesday night marked the end of Wayne Cooper’s term as council member, and it was the last official meeting headed by Coleman. A special meeting is slated for Nov. 29, where Mayor-elect Victor Gonzales and Council Member-elect Doug Weiss will be sworn in to their elected positions.
