This morning, students from Negley Elementary School in Kyle took part in National Walk to School Day, a program to promote healthy habits and community involvement.
At 7 a.m., Negley students, their parents, and PTA volunteers met at four different parks in the Plum Creek neighborhood and set off to school, a distance of less than a mile from the meeting points, Principal Melody Crowther said.
“Our campus is very health-oriented,” she said. “This is another way to get kids active and working on their healthy lifestyle.”
Besides highlighting walking to school, National Walk to School Day is intended to bring communities together. Negley is the only school in Hays CISD registered to participate.
"It’s a fun time for the students and parents to get together and walk to school,” Crowther said. "Some neighbors may not know each other. It's a good way to build community and for students and parents to get to know each other."
Crowther said she hopes some Negley students and their parents will continue taking the trek to campus, even after National Walk to School Day passes.
“Because we’re a neighborhood school, a lot of our kids walk anyway,” she said. “But we would like more kids to walk to school and have that opportunity.”
