City Council approved today the appointment of city Chief Financial Officer Elaine Hart as interim city manager.
Hart will assume the role starting Oct. 30, when City Manager Marc Ott's resignation takes effect. The city
announced last month that Ott had accepted a position with the International City/County Management Association in Washington, D.C.
"The city of Austin stands at a unique moment, and we need a strong and capable leader to help guide us through this interim phase," Mayor Steve Adler said. "Elaine was our choice for many reasons, including that she brings an enterprise-wide view and broad experience with all our city departments and operations."

The process for hiring a permanent city manager will take approximately six to nine months. City Council took the first steps today toward initiating that process by directing the city's human resources department to send out requests for qualifications for a search firm to identify candidates.
Hart's tenure with the city spans more than 20 years. Serving as CFO since April 2012, she has also served as senior vice president of finance and corporate services for Austin Energy, the city-owned electric utility.
"I’m genuinely humbled by the opportunity to lead this workforce, even just for this short period of time," she said. "I appreciate the confidence this mayor and council have shown in me. My focus, for now, is helping guide us through the budget process in partnership with the city manager."
City Council is expected to adopt its fiscal year 2016-17 budget Sept. 12-14.
