Kyle City Council voted unanimously Aug. 24 to allocate money from its yearly budget to go toward the construction of a veterans memorial.

Council Member District 4 David Wilson proposed the idea during discussion of the fiscal year 2016-17 budget.

"It's about time," Wilson said. "Even very small communities have one."

The city will budget $10,000 for the memorial, and the rest of the money required for the project will be raised through private donations. Other memorials have cost $50,000 to $70,000, Wilson said.

Wilson said that ideally, the memorial in Kyle would have a section in which the names of residents who died in war could be etched into stone and be remembered forever.

Wilson said there are plans in the works to create a commission to discuss the location and design of the memorial. Members of the commission would include members from veteran groups in Kyle, as well as everyday citizens.

"We have gone a long time [without a memorial]," Wilson said. "I think our town's ready."
