City of Bee Cave staff has been working with consultant firms—Wallace, Roberts, Todd and Asakura Robinson—since June to provide an update to the city’s first comprehensive plan in and a vision for 2037, the city’s 50th anniversary.

What is a comprehensive plan?

A comprehensive plan determines a vision for the growth of a city, including its policies, projects and objectives over a period of time, as well as a timeline to implement these ideas, City Manager Travis Askey said.

Bee Cave’s comprehensive plan update takes into account citizen and stakeholder views through community forums and surveys.

History

Incorporated in 1987 as a village, Bee Cave created its master plan in 1990 and its first comprehensive plan in 2000. The village became a city in 2006 and the comprehensive plan was updated in 2009. However, much has changed for the city, Askey said.

Bee Cave citizens elected a home rule form of government—giving the city the right to annex properties adjacent to its borders—in 2013 when the city limits included 3,375 acres. Bee Cave has annexed property along Hwy. 71, Hamilton Pool Road and RR 620. Its city limits include 5,448 acres as of March 1, 2016.

The comprehensive plan will provide a path for Bee Cave to follow through 2037—including specific projects, policies and objectives to direct City Council, staff and the community.

“Updating the comprehensive plan is an essential tool used by cities to strategically and effectively manage growth,” Askey said.|

Progress

Community forums were held in June and December to provide feedback on what residents are prioritizing as important for their city. Citizen survey responses help planners draft the update.

“We’re currently reviewing the first draft of each of the comprehensive plan elements, goals and action items,” Planning and Development Director Lindsey Oskoui said. “We’ll have a workshop in late March or early April to make sure we’re on track and expect to present the draft plan to the public in summer.”
