Rep. Paul Workman has won the Texas House of Representatives District 47 Republican Primary by receiving 16,097 votes, or 60.6 percent of total votes counted, according to the Travis County Clerk Elections Division unofficial results. The results as of 12:07 a.m. were from 190 of 190 precincts reported.

Incumbent Workman’s opponent Jay Wiley received 10,477 votes, or 39.4 percent of total votes counted.

“I’ve been a staunch conservative in Travis County for six years now, ” Workman said. “We believe the voters of Travis County also believe that.”

Workman added that his first priorities for District 47 when Texas Legislature reconvenes in 2017 will be transportation and water.

Texas House representatives serve two-year terms.

Wiley, who challenged Workman to represent parts of South and West Travis County, said he knocked on over 7,000 doors and made over 5,000 handwritten notes to voters but could not respond to the amount of money Workman had for the race.

“What you saw in this election was the power of incumbency,” Wiley said. “This was always David versus Goliath, and it looks like Goliath won.”

Workman will proceed to the November general election to run against Democrat candidate Ana Jordan, who ran unopposed in the Democratic Party primary and received 14,805 votes, according to unofficial results.

All results are unofficial until canvassed.

Early voting counts indicate that Paul Workman is ahead of Jay Wiley in votes in the March 1 Republican primary election for Texas House of Representatives District 47.

Incumbent Workman, who began serving in the House in January 2011, has 6,663 votes, or 59.7 percent of total votes cast, according the Travis County Elections Office unofficial early voting count. Challenger Wiley has 4,502 votes, or 40.3 percent of the vote.

Workman will be serving his fourth term in the House if elected. Wiley will be serving his first term if elected. Texas House terms last two years.

Workman ran on a campaign that focused on immigration, transportation and water. He said one of the first things he would do if re-elected is address “sanctuary cities” that ignore federal immigration laws.

“As a result, innocent Texans have been harmed by individuals that should have been deported,” Workman said.

Wiley ran on addressing property tax relief, limited government and transportation. One of his first goals will be property taxes, the most critical issue facing Travis County, Wiley said.

“I would like to eventually abolish property taxes altogether so homeowners can truly own our homes instead of leasing them from the government in perpetuity,” he said.

The winner of the March 1 Republican primary will face Democrat Ana Jordan in the November general election. Jordan ran unopposed in the March 1 Democrat Primary Election and received 5,686 votes.

Texas House District 47 covers parts of South and West Travis County.

All results are unofficial until canvassed.
