The Travis County Commissioners Court unanimously voted to lift its burn ban until at least March 1 and appointed a new fire marshal during its Feb. 23 meeting.

Tony Callaway, who has been the assistant fire marshal with the Travis County fire marshal's office since 2009, told commissioners before the vote that the rain that occurred on Feb. 22 made him comfortable with lifting the burn ban for one week. Commissioners will reassess conditions during the court's March 1 meeting.

"We still would like [residents] to contact their local fire department prior to doing any burning and keep in mind the wind speeds," Callaway said.

The court voted unanimously to appoint Callaway as the new fire marshal for a two-year term with an annual salary of $103,714, effective March 1 and approve a related bond. Commissioner Brigid Shea was off the dais.

Callaway replaces Hershel Lee, who is retiring.
