Updated Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. to include a quote from Buda Mayor Todd Ruge. The city of Buda could be on its way to funding the construction of a dog park at the Buda Sportsplex, 310 Buda Sportsplex Drive. The 1.5-acre dog park would cost $70,946 to design and build. Buda City Council is set to consider whether to approve the project along with other park improvements at its regular meeting Feb. 2. The dog park will include two fenced play areas—a 33,750-square-foot area for larger dogs and a 22,500-square-foot area for smaller dogs. It will also feature such amenities as shade structures, benches, walk ramps, jump bars, hoops, hurdles and waiting tables. Mayor Todd Ruge said he supports building the dog park. "I’m all for it," Ruge said. "I'm in favor of a move that was put into the budget unanimously [by City Council]. I think it’s going to be a really good addition to the city.” Other park improvements include shade structures at Garlic Creek Park, Whispering Hollow, Bradfield Park and Stagecoach Park; playground equipment and resurfacing of a basketball court at Bonita Vista Park; pavilion lighting and a water fountain at Garlic Creek Park; pavilion lighting, a kiosk and a barbecue pit at Green Meadows Park; resurfacing the basketball court, a kiosk and water fountain at Stoneridge Park; pavilion lighting and a water fountain at Whispering Hollow Park and a water fountain at Jackson Tyler Norris Memorial Skate Park. In October, Buda City Council approved appropriating $217,000 in total funding for the dog park and other park improvements. The funds will be derived from the Parks Capital Fund in the fiscal year 2015-16 budget. A bid from contractor T.F. Harper & Associates to construct the improvements totals $214,858. The item is recommended for approval. The meeting will be held Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Buda City Council Chambers, 121 Main St., Buda.
