The runoff in Buda to decide who will fill the City Council Place 3 seat will be held Dec. 8.
Buda City Council voted unanimously Nov. 17 in favor of a resolution ordering the runoff election.
Incumbent Jose Montoya, who was elected in November 2012, will be on the ballot along with David Nuckels, who manages water resources for a living.
Montoya, a former Air Force service member who spent years as a state employee, received 39.9 percent, or 245 tallies; Nuckels received 37.3 percent, or 229 tallies. Basil Lombardo, the third-place challenger, received 22.8 percent, or 140 votes, and was therefore eliminated from the race. A runoff is necessary because neither Montoya nor Nuckels received more than 50 percent of the vote.
Early voting begins Nov. 23 and ends Dec. 4. Buda City Council Chambers, 121 Main St., Buda, is the only polling location. Voting will not be held Nov. 26-27 in observance of Thanksgiving Day.
Kyle business owner announces candidacy
Travis Mitchell, owner of Mitchell Motorsports in Kyle, announced Nov. 19 he is planning to run for Kyle City Council in May.
Mitchell said he has not decided which seat he will seek. Districts 1 and 3, held by Diane Hervol and Shane Arabie, respectively, will be up for re-election in May. Both are at-large positions and thus do not require residency in any of the city’s three geographical voting districts.
“I am committed to campaigning differently than you might be accustomed to seeing on television,” Mitchell said in a statement. “My campaign will be about substance—no more, and no less—with a very specific goal of engaging our community on the issues. My goal is to win by inspiring our citizens who have never voted in a local election to participate.”
He said he plans to file for a place on the ballot when filing opens in January.
