Possible enforcement changes for short-term rentals, or STRs, will be presented by council members and Austin city staff during the Aug. 13 City Council meeting.

District 10 Council Member Sheri Gallo has worked with Austin's Code Department since mid-June to find better ways to enforce Austin's existing STR laws. The department launched a pilot enforcement program during July to increase enforcement.

Action will not be taken on code changes during the Aug. 13 meeting, but council and staff will discuss possible regulatory scenarios before sending the issue to council's Planning and Neighborhoods Committee, which next meets Aug. 17.

During its Aug. 13 meeting, Austin City Council voted to send proposals that would change short-term rental enforcement to the Planning and Neighborhoods Committee, which next meets Aug. 17. The item will be brought back to full council for a vote Aug. 20

Other agenda highlights:

  • Consider approving a lease agreement to convert 30 acres at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport into eight new gates. The new gates would allow Southwest Airlines and Allegiant Airlines to expand services in Austin. Council unanimously voted to send the item to Audit and Finance Committee for deeper exploration of the lease. The item will come back to full council for a vote on Aug. 27.

  • Consider setting a baseline determining how much affordable housing could be required at The Grove at Shoal Creek. Mayor Steve Adler and other council members signaled an intent to postpone the item in order to learn more about the project before voting. Council unanimously voted to postpone any baseline zoning determination for The Grove at Shoal Creek development until its October zoning meeting.

  • Consider creating a Bond Oversight Committee to track how bond funds are spent. Council unanimously approved creating the committee during its Aug. 13 meeting.
