Paul Workman, R-Austin, the state representative for parts of western and southern Travis County, gave members the Oak Hill Business and Professional Association on July 9 his thoughts on the new rating system for public schools and other updates from the 84th Texas Legislature. Workman discussed how public schools will now receive letter grades from the state, from an A to an F, based on student performance, as a result of HB 2804 becoming law. “If you have children at an elementary school, and that school got a D, the goal is to get parents more involved and help the school turn around and be better,” Workman said. When asked by an attendee of the luncheon what tools he has if the school his child goes to receives an F, Workman said to communicate with the principal, parent-teacher associations and the Austin ISD board of trustees. Workman also said the Texas Education Agency has regulations in place if a school is failing. Workman also discussed HB 4, an approved bill that enables a grant program for pre-kindergarten education. HB 4 effectively expands the amount of pre-K education available to students, he said. The bill called for putting $130 million into the program, he added.
