Planning is underway for new police and public works facilities in Sunset Valley.
At the City Council’s June 16 meeting, Don Greer, the vice president of Wiginton Hooker Jeffry Architects, unveiled concepts the architecture firm has developed for the facilities.
The proposed 11,800-square-foot police building would devote 1,800 square feet to a training area. Adjacent to the building a 13,200-square-foot parking lot would have eight public spaces and 25 secure parking spaces for patrol cars. A separate Public Works Department building would have nearly 7,000 square feet dedicated to administrative and operations purposes as well as additional space dedicated to storage.
WHJA developed a few scenarios. Mayor Rose Cardona and Council Member Jeff Burdett both said they want architects to continue refining Scenario C, which would involve constructing the public works building between City Hall and Lone Oak Trail and adding the police building on the opposite side of City Hall.
“With Scenario C ... it looks like a campus, and it’s more of a balance; that was one of the most compelling [options],” Cardona said.
Council approved hiring WHJA on Dec. 2. The firm will develop a strategic plan and budget estimates for Scenario C to be revisited during future council meetings.
