Travis County Commissioners Court will consider calling a bond election in May 2015 for the construction of a new civil and family courthouse.

During its Jan. 21 meeting, the court unanimously approved changing the proposed election date.

The county had originally considered a November 2014 election, but decided against it because of other elections taking place, including the first Austin City Council elections using the new voting districts as well as a planned urban rail ballot initiative.

If voters approve issuing bonds to fund the new courthouse, the county would have a goal of opening the new courthouse in the first quarter of 2018.

In a separate motion, the court decided that the proposed courthouse would face Republic Square Park and that the building's parking would be constructed underground.
