Austin water and wastewater rates are under review, and Austin Water customers will have their first chance to comment on the process today.

The local water utility began a cost-of-service study, which entails a review of the process by which costs are allocated among customer classes as well as updates and improvements to ways in which fair and equitable rates are determined, according to an Austin Water news release.

Today's meeting is the first in a series of public involvement opportunities that will continue through next spring. The goal of the public involvement committee is to provide representation for each water utility customer class, review the cost-of-service process and provide recommendations to Austin Water, according to the release.

The public involvement committee comprises members of the residential, multifamily, commercial and large-volume customer classes. A committee meeting was held among wholesale customers at 9:30 a.m. today to discuss future water and wastewater rates for the wholesale customer class.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in Waller Creek Center, 625 E. 10th St., Room 104, Austin.
