Maria Corbalan opened Maria’s Taco Xpress as a food trailer in 1997 and expanded to a brick-and-mortar restaurant in 2006. The restaurant, known for its distinctive statue on South Lamar Boulevard, will close by the end of the year after more than two decades in South Austin.

According to a press release from commercial real estate brokerage firm CBRE, Corbalan will be selling the decorations and fixtures within the restaurant so they can find a home elsewhere.

Corbalan moved to Austin from Argentina when she was young.

“I fell in love with this city and its people. My restaurant has allowed me to touch so many lives over the years and for that I am incredibly grateful,” she said in the release.

According to CBRE, the sale of the property at 2529 S. Lamar Blvd., Austin, will be finalized in November to an unnamed local investment group, and that unnamed group is working on finding a new tenant for the location. 512-444-0261. www.tacoxpress.com
