A new 132-unit affordable housing community is moving forward because of $13.5 million in state funding announced today.

The low-income housing tax credits awarded by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs will be used to build The Jordan, a community for local, low-income families. The neighborhood will have a community learning center that provides free education, financial stability and health programs.

Foundation Communities, the nonprofit building the homes, also received $4 million from the city of Austin through 2013 housing bonds approved by Austin voters for the project.

Fourteen of the apartments at The Jordan will be set aside for families moving directly out of homelessness.

Construction of The Jordan will begin in 2018, and the community is expected to open in 2019.
