Robin Henderson will officially begin leading the Austin Police Department on Sept. 3 following City Council's unanimous confirmation of her appointment as interim police chief Aug. 31.

Henderson takes the reigns at APD on the heels of Police Chief Joseph Chacon's August announcement of his retirement. After more than two decades on the force, Chacon's last day with the APD will be Sept. 2.

Henderson has been with the APD for 26 years and most recently served as Chacon's chief of staff overseeing department operations and managing its specialized units. In the past, Henderson served in positions ranging from patrol and investigations to training and leadership roles.

“Chief Henderson is an experienced, respected veteran of the Austin Police Department with a passion for public service and making a positive impact on the community,” Interim City Manager Jesús Garza said in a statement. “She is a true servant leader, and I am confident she will do an excellent job leading the department during this time of transition.”

Henderson will remain in the role until a permanent police chief is chosen by Austin's city manager and confirmed by council following a search process.

“I value the trust he has put in me to move the organization forward in a positive direction,” Henderson said in a statement. “I am truly honored and humbled, and I appreciate the opportunity to serve as your interim chief.”
