Malaga Downtown restaurant Malaga Tapas & Bar closed over Labor Day weekend.[/caption] Sixteen years after opening its doors, Malaga Tapas & Bar co-owner Greg Schnurr closed the restaurant last weekend. Co-owner Barret Brannam thanked Austinites in an emailed statement for their support over the years and said the restaurant was proud to have been "at the forefront of such proven and popular culinary traditions." Jordan Harris of Vess Consulting Group, who represents Malaga, said in an email the group is "excited for the potential to bring a new concept to the space." Brannam did not offer a reason for the closure, saying in the statement, "In a growing city filled with the entrepreneurial spirits of new private business owners, an abundance of new concepts are gracing Austin’s vibrant culinary scene." Malaga offered more than 20 Spanish dishes meant to be shared, including croquetas de pollo, calamari and other seafood, pork and lamb meatballs as well as omelettes.  Brannam said Schnurr helped open many downtown restaurants, including Bertram's, Peche and Moonshine Patio Bar & Grille, before opening Malaga—first in Austin's Warehouse District and later in its current location at 440 W. Second St.
