Crews will begin on Monday an $11 million redevelopment project for an office building one block west of the state Capitol.

The former home of the Texas State Teachers Association—located at 316 W. 12th St., Austin—sits on an acre and will be expanded by 26,000 rentable square feet, and a floor will be added to half the building. Work is expected to be completed by late 2017, according to a news release. The name of the 100,000-square-foot building is changing to Westview.

New amenities include a rooftop terrace, building conference room, fitness facility, showers and lockers, indoor bike storage and a landscaped courtyard built around a 100-year-old live oak tree. Westview will also feature floor-to-ceiling views of the capitol.

“We look forward to undertaking this major redevelopment and delivering a product competes with new Class A office product,” said Brian Leslie, managing director of the Prescott Group, in the release. “This location is superb and certain other classic features simply can’t be replicated today, like a massive oak tree that will become a new focal point and gathering place. The concept behind our renovation is to save the best of what exists and pair it with the best of what’s current in terms of architecture, design and appealing amenities.”

The new owner of the building, Dallas-based Prescott Group Inc. now turns its focus toward attracting tenants. Among those will be a 2,000-square-foot restaurant, according to the release.
